Situated in central Europe you could be forgiven for thinking that Switzerland is one of the most international countries in the world - it has four official languages (German, French, Italian and Romanish) and is the home base for many international organizations, including the Red Cross. Sharing borders with France, Italy, Germany, Liechtenstein and Austria, Switzerland truly has the best of all its neighbours - its cities are packed with European stores and restaurants. The main tourist destinations within Switzerland include Berne, the country's capital; Basel, close to the French and German borders (and the German Black Forest); Zurich, the bustling largest city; Geneva, location of the United Nations and the Red Cross, and Lausanne, situated on Lake Geneva.
Switzerland is an incredibly easy country to get to, thanks in part to its location in the centre of Europe. Rail connections from the majority of the European capitals (Berlin, Paris, Rome, and so forth) are regular, and many are on the high-speed train network. Road links are also sufficient with Motorway 1 and 2 connecting the interior of Switzerland to the surrounding countries. The airports in Switzerland are some of Europe's busiest, with EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, Geneva Cointrin International and Zurich International being visited by many millions of passengers each year. Airlines such as easyJet, Swiss Air, Ryanair, British Airways, bmibaby and Flyglobespan are amongst those which use the facilities. For exploring the country or for visiting the many ski resorts and mountain villages within Switzerland, rental cars are a good option. Brands such as Europcar, Sixt, National and Budget are operational within the country.
